Where are you located? What airports are you referring to?

I am living in Belgium (europe)
so the airports near me are:
1) Brussels international airport (larg)
2) Charleroi airport (smal)
3) Liege airport (smal)
4) Oostend airport (smal)
5) Eindhoven airport (smal)
6) Maastricht / Aachen airport (medium)
7) Amsterdam Schiphol (larg)
8) paris (larg)
9) koln / bonn (larg)
10) Weeze airport (smal)

all these airports are within 2 hours of driving

some what further away is also Frankfurt airport (larg)

so you notice it's hard to find the cheapest flight because I have 10+ airports near me

Bigger airports, mean more competition, especially for international travel from both U.S. and internationally based airlines.

Unfortunately, airlines charge a $150-$400 premium for commuter connecting international flights — this means larger groups of travelers can overpay by thousands of dollars by leaving from their nearby smaller airport.

Take a close look at driving to a bigger “hub” city, but don’t forget to factor in fuel and parking costs into the equation (and note: there are some isolated cases where this premium isn’t charged).

sure I understand the factor of fuel and parking fees, but when I take the train, wich cost about the same to get to the larger airports there are still different airfare prices. And the prices can be as different as + 500 € for the same destination but different departure airport, and for that price I am willing to drive an extra hour. The parking fees at the larger airports are all about the same.

beside of that, I am luky that my parants are willing to drive me to the airport so it cost me only the fuel, but all airports are about the same distance.

than the fact of competition, I noticed that the small airports near me are strong in cheap short distance flights and the larg airports in cheap long haul flights, but unfortunaly this is not always true.
