When to Buy: For the cheapest international airfare, purchase your airline tickets between five months and between six weeks/one month before departure. Also, try to buy international airfare when an airline has an sale, but since these are not regular events, sign up for FareCompare airfare alerts and we will let you know when prices come down.

Flexible Travelers Only: If you wait to purchase inside the 30-days before departure window, you may see an occasional good deal but these are usually worthwhile only for those whose travel dates are extremely flexible.

Inflexible Travel Dates: If you have extremely rigid travel dates (for example, for travel to a wedding), you can purchase airfare up to 11 months before departure for peace of mind, but you will pay a couple of hundred dollars more for this early purchase.

Know the Europe Travel Season: This is crucial to finding a good deal - Summer is most expensive, Winter is the cheapest time to travel, while airfare prices are moderate for Spring and Fall. The following periods are historically when prices change:

Summer Season Ends: Prices drop during mid- to late August
Winter Season Begins: Prices drop further during mid- to late October
Spring Season Begins: Prices rise from mid- to late March
Summer Season Begins: Prices rise further from mid-June

More Ways to Save: Most international flight deals require a Saturday night stay; you will pay more if you do not include this. Also, traveling on week days is cheaper than flying on weekends; if you travel on a weekend, expect to pay $80 to $100 more roundtrip.

Note: The cost of oil is directly tied to international airline prices. On average, international travel prices will be about 10% higher this summer than in 2010.

5 Steps to Getting the Best Airfare for International Travel

    1. Sign up for airfare alerts
    2. Shop and buy within 5 months and 6 weeks before departure
    3. Fly during the week; stay over a Saturday
    4. Know the Europe seasons
    5. Keep an eye on oil prices.

    sad I’m frustrated
    1) I'm living near Volcan, Panama (2 bus hours from David) and am planning a 3 month tour of South America. Therre are no travel agents in my area to assist me. Do you help with trip planning? If not, can you recommend several on line travel agency sites that can help me with my travels in S.A.? I've looked but haven't found agencies that speak english or work with traveling in multiple countries.
    2) I want to fly from Panama City to Bogota second week in Feb.where I will start my trip. Prices are hurrendous for this short 1 hour flight. I've searched but haven't found anything reasonable. Any suggestions?/ Travel in Colombia is better by air, so if I decide to fly(rather than bus) to multiple cities Ihow do I do this?
    3) I need specific information on luggage restrictions for flying into Bogota--like how much luggage can I take on the plane. I have a lot of luggage that I have to figure out how to transport. Where can I find this information on line? Do the restrictions vary from airline to airline and from country to country?
    4) I plan to fly from Bogota to Denver in May for a 3 week visit. All the flights I found online out of Bogota have extended layovers in various cities. It's much faster and less money to fly out of San Jose, CR directly to Denver, but it's hard and time consuming to travel from Panama City to Volcan to San Jose to Denver. I REALLY NEED HELP. Thank you for any suggestions or referrals to agencies who can answer my questions. I do speak Spanish but not fluently. I am a 62 year old single woman who will be travelling alone.

    silly I’m unsure
Please help, we want to take our family to Germany this summer (late May 'til mid June) and have been told to wait to purchase our tickets until late March-early April when the summer sales come out. We flew over to Frankfurt in 2007 & 2009 and paid $675 & $770 respectively for our tickets which we purchased in November prior to our trip the following May. Prices currently are high and scaring us, with 6 people going, several hundred dollars per ticket makes a huge difference. We have already told our kids who are getting excited so we really want to do this trip. Do you think prices will come back down by April?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

When will be the best time for me to book my airfare to get the lowest price. I am going from Washington DC to London on June 11, 2011 and returning from Rome to Washington DC on June 22.
